Discovering the Dominican Republic, One Destination at a Time
My first trip to the Dominican Republic started with a simple beach vacation to Punta Cana. But once I ventured beyond the resort gates and explored the colonial streets of Santo Domingo, I realized this island had layers most visitors never see.
What I found in the DR was something most travel sites completely miss. This country isn't just all-inclusive resorts — it has the first European settlement in the Americas, Caribbean mountain peaks over 3,000 meters, world-class kiteboarding, and a food culture built on mangu, sancocho, and the freshest seafood you'll ever taste. But the travel information available was either resort-focused, outdated, or written by someone who never left the pool.
Over the years, I've walked the cobblestone streets of the Zona Colonial, watched humpback whales breach in Samaná Bay, hiked to the summit of Pico Duarte, explored the untouched beaches of Barahona, and eaten my way through the comedores of every town I've visited. Each trip deepened my appreciation for a country that deserves far more nuanced coverage than it gets.
The Dominican Republic rewards the curious traveler — the one willing to take the gua-gua instead of the resort shuttle, eat at the corner comedor instead of the hotel buffet, and stay long enough to feel the rhythm of merengue and bachata in every town. That's the kind of travel this site is built for. I want you to experience these places the way I do — not the Instagram version, but the real one.
20 Years in the Making
A beach vacation that turned into something more. One day beyond the resort gates led to Santo Domingo's Zona Colonial, the first cathedral in the Americas, and the realization that the DR is far more than all-inclusives.
The north coast reveals a completely different DR. The teleférico to Pico Isabel de Torres, the 27 Charcos waterfalls, and the kiteboarding culture of Cabarete. The realization that the Dominican Republic is not one place — it's dozens of distinct experiences.
Jarabacoa, Constanza, Pico Duarte — the Caribbean's highest peak at 3,098 meters. Waterfalls, coffee farms, and temperatures that drop to near freezing. The Dominican Alps become a favorite corner of the island.
Return trips to Samaná for whale season, the untouched southwest coast at Barahona, Las Terrenas' French-bohemian beach scene. Off-the-beaten-path towns, wild beaches, local comedores. Documenting everything — video, notes, real prices in RD$.
Years of notes, videos, and travel experience finally become a proper resource. The site we wished existed when we first started exploring this island.
The Person Behind the Pages
Healthcare IT professional by day, Dominican Republic travel obsessive by every other waking moment. Based in San Diego, California. Has returned to the DR many times since 2019. 40+ countries traveled, but the Dominican Republic holds a special place — the beaches, the food, the music, and the sense that there's always another corner of the island worth exploring. Enjoys the trip planning almost as much as the travel itself.
What You'll Never Find Here
We built this site because we got tired of DR travel content that's secretly a press trip recap or a sponsored resort review dressed up as honest advice. Discover DR exists because we wanted the resource we wished we had when we first started exploring this island.
